Abstracts of the ASHS Northeast Region Annual Meeting

A graduate student and three undergraduate students have been involved in the various aspects of this project. They were trained in evaluating and applying strategies for greenhouse environment control. The graduate student completed his doctoral dissertation based on this research. In addition, the students learned about environmental sensors and data analysis. How have the results been disseminated to communities of interest?

The results of this project have been disseminated through Extension presentations, Extension publications, articles in the trade press. In addition, a Ph. What do you plan to do during the next reporting period to accomplish the goals?

Nothing Reported Impacts What was accomplished under these goals? Objective 1: This work is on-going. Objective 2: A discision support system was developedin order to optimize the electricity use from a landfill gas fired microturbine system install at a greenhouse facility: the electricity can be used on-site to power the supplemental lighting system and increase plant production, it can be exported to the local utility grid and generate additional income, or a combination of local use and export.

Additional scientific publications are scheduled to be submitted. Objective 3: Environmental data were collected in a research and demosntration greenhouse. The data were evaluated and discussed with the greenhouse operator. Changes were inplemented in the computer control system in order to improve the plant environment as well as to reduce the cost of maintaing optimum growing conditions.

Objectice 4: Various Extension publications and articles in the trade press were published. They discussed measures greenhouse growers can take to help them reduce energy use and increase energy efficiency. Development of a decision support system to operate the greenhouse lighting and shading systems powered by a distributed generator.

Orchids require precisely controlled environmental conditions that are not always easy to obtain during New Jersey's warm and humid summer conditions.

The system records dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, photosynthetically active radiation, wind speed and direction in several locations throughout the greenhouse. This long-term recording project aims to provide insight into the greenhouse environment conditions so that recommendations can be made for the most appropriate control strategies. This work in on-going. Impacts A datalogger system installed in the orchid section at the EcoComplex greenhouse has been collecting environmental data.

It is anticipated that evaluation of this data will result in recommendations for improved environmental control. In particular, it is anticipated that orchid growers can: a reduce operating costs for maintaining the optimum conditions in the orchid greenhouse, and b improve orchid quality typically measured in number of flower spikes and number of flowers per spike.

Orchids require precisely controlled environmental conditions that are not always easy to obtain during our warm and humid summer conditions. The system is recording dry bulb temperature, relative humidity, photosynthetically active radiation, wind speed and direction in several locations throughout the greenhouse. The plan is to record conditions for at least a year so that the data can be used to improve environmental conditions by recommending the most appropriate control strategies.

Additional studies were conducted to evaluate the spectral output of LED lamps as possible replacements for the incandescent and fluorescent lamps commonly used in growth chambers. New growth chamber trials with several tomato varieties were conducted using off-the-shelf LED lamps that were previously evaluated for their spectral output. This work is on-going. A PhD student Matthew Blanchard at Michigan State University was advised as an external dissertation advisory committee member on his dissertation research titled "Manipulating light and temperature for energy-efficient greenhouse production of ornamental crops".

Erik Runkle. Impacts The datalogger system installed in the orchid section at the EcoComplex greenhouse was calibrated and environmental data is being collected. It is anticipated that improved environmental control will: a reduce operating costs for maintaining the optimum conditions in the greenhouse, and b improve plant quality typically measured in number of flower spikes and number of flowers per spike.

Low light intensities provided by the LED lighting system installed in a growth chamber resulted in sub-optimal plant growth: the plants grew slower and in some cases did not develop fruits compared to treatments using a combination of fluorescent and incandescent lamps control treatment. LED lighting systems offer the potential for significant energy savings provided they can deliver an acceptable light environment for crop production.

Both, A. Greenhouse energy conservation and efficiency Abstract. JanuaryAtlantic City, NY. For commercial greenhouse operations to further reduce the consumption of fossil fuel consumption, energy management and conservation as well as the use of renewable energy sources appear to be the most economical and sustainable options.

Growth chambers, specialized controlled environment plant production systems, are used worldwide to produce high quality plant material both for research and commercial production. Both, Chair , tissue culture guidelines were developed that are used by researchers and manufacturers to ensure that common measuring and reporting procedures are followed so that experimental results can be more thoroughly understood and more easily replicated.

A study was conducted evaluating the spectral output of LED lamps as possible replacements for the incandescent and fluorescent lamps commonly used. Trials with tomato in plant growth chambers were conducted using the LED lamps that were previously evaluated for their spectral output. It was terminated on September 30,
