Colorful flowers all year round
A bright garden even in winter? This is possible by choosing the right species. The blooms must then be staggered so that the garden is as attractive in December as it is in May! The primroses, harbinger of spring, reveal umbel flowers in various colors. This is the first pigmented note of spring in a long list of bulbous plants (hyacinths, tulips, daffodils ...), perennials (aubriète, bergénia, St. John's wort ...) and shrubs (Daphne, Gardenia, Pittosporum ...).
Not to mention the delicious flowers of trees such as magnolias, cherry trees and flowering quince trees. Summer also offers its share of pastel flowers, while autumn is distinguished by bright blooms like shrub sage.
And in winter ? Think of the Camellia bokuhan with red flowers from January to March and the yellow blooms of mahonia and mimosa. The flowers of the heather December Red ’and Viburnum bordnantense do not go unnoticed in winter.
Shades of leaves, fruits and bark
The color easily evokes flowers, but the leaves and bark should not be neglected. Dry regions can afford to plant agaves, whose opulent rosette of fatty leaves are sometimes streaked or bluish. Aucuba japonica Golden King ’is a shrub variety with yellow evergreen leaves speckled with green. We should also mention Coprosma, whose glossy leaves are red and edged with purple.
The fruits can even shade flowers like those of snowberry. This shrub is a real botanical gem thanks to the pink or white berries that cover it from August to November. Some bark is amazing!
In winter, the bare twigs of Cornus sanguinea take on bright orange and red colors, depending on the variety.
Color in the fittings
Nature offers its share of colors for those who want to choose them well. But in the garden, you can also count on the amenities! An orange wall at the back of the garden will bring out the green of the foliage and the blue of the swimming pool. It is possible to paint a pergola in mauve to match a wisteria or in red to enhance a climber with white flowers. All wooden structures are easy to paint and varnish for personalized shades to your taste.
Aluminum fences are available in all colors. This is a good way to create a colorful background, layered with plants of various foliage. Think of shrubs with variegated leaves that bring relief like a Cornus alba or a Euonymus japonicus.
The advantage of furniture is that it is easier to change than a shrub! So, you can choose a beautiful terrace in sober tones and come and wake it up with armchairs and vitamin decorative objects. Side cushions, we have fun and we put on several covers to change as desired.
We don’t hesitate to choose patterned fabrics to add a touch of pep’s. We add rugs, mirrors, sculptures, suspensions and the garden takes on a whole new look!
In the evening, we turn on the lights and alternate shades according to the mood. The exterior has a completely new look with colored lights in the water points, in the flower beds or on the terrace.
How to associate the colors?
From plants to furniture, the home gardener is spoiled for choice when it comes to creating a colorful garden. But how to combine colors without lack of taste?
There is no set rule, only complementary colors that go well together. The principle of complementary colors is that they reinforce each other to stand out better. For example, red will appear more intense next to green. The same goes for yellow and purple, as well as blue and orange. However, in the garden, anything goes and the main thing is to have fun!
