Walking on a leash

Teach your dog to walk well on a leash, here are our tips.

According to the World Health Organization, it is recommended that you take 10,000 steps a day for good health. By walking your dog daily, you can easily achieve this goal.

To make this ritual a pleasant one, it is essential to teach your pooch to walk on a leash. To say goodbye to back pain and tendonitis, the solution is learning!

Age to start the leash

  • We can not emphasize this enough : your companion must be conditioned from an early age. Bad behavior is very difficult to do away with. Certain breeds (Boxer, Braque, Beagle ...) develop such power in adulthood that this learning becomes impossible. You should never trust him, because he can quickly be distracted (by a cat, by an unknown situation…). You will need to repeat the exercises regularly throughout your life. In short, you are the only master on board.

The preparation :

  • Immediately get your puppy used to wearing a collar. This new accessory may bother him. He will scratch himself, try to lick himself, or even remain prostrate. It’s only a few days of history. Add an identification tag to it.
  • Choose the right material:
  • The harnessis highly recommended, as it balances the animal's weight and prevents it from being strangled by the pressure of its leash on its collar. There are a considerable number of models. The NON-PULL is great for getting started, as it is easy to adjust on a growing individual. It naturally limits the dog's pulls. The two straps placed under the forelegs tighten and force him to walk at your own pace. Do not forget to remove him after each outing, because a puppy eats everything. Later, you can choose one that fits perfectly to his body type.
  • A leash : stretchable is not recommended for safety especially in the city. It can cut, get tangled, become dangerous in traffic ... Prefer a well-made one from 120 to 200 cm to give your dog enough amplitude.
  • Take bags to collect the droppings. You too must take good habits!

The practice :

After you've outfitted and chosen which side your puppy will walk on (often on the right), you can give it a try in your backyard or somewhere quiet to observe its demeanor. The leash must be released. You may be faced with three scenarios:

  • The dog who pulls: If he passes you, say his name followed by a "no!" »Closes by giving a slight shake to his leash and ordering« at the foot! To get him back to his position. If successful, he should be congratulated energetically.
  • The dog who refuses to move forward:Walking on a leash is unnatural and your puppy may be bothered by his collar, harness, leash or any external stress. He should not be circling around you, twisting his leash, or looking behind him. Say his name and "come!" " slowly. Optionally offer him a treat so that he associates walking on a leash with a pleasant situation. Never come back with your puppy in your arms. Refusing to confront a difficulty will not help you in your future relationship.
  • The dog that follows you:What luck ! In order not to lose this advantage, it is necessary to reinforce this positive behavior. Say his name and "That's good! Keep on going ! "Let us not forget that any situation can be turned around especially in adolescence (6-10 months).

After learning to walk on a leash, moments of complicity are guaranteed. All members of the family will be happy to be able to walk and practice activities with this companion. Why not the canivtt or the canicross?

Smart tip

For the adult dog whose training has not been successful, you can try the halter collar. The more he pulls on the leash, the more the nylon strap that surrounds the muzzle forces the animal to have its head down by pressing on the muzzle. He must then walk to the rhythm of his master.

To meditate : “I decided to be happy because it's good for you. »Voltaire
