Cutting your dog's claws: why and how?

Insufficient physical expenditure or living in an apartment does not always allow our dogs to wear their claws in a natural way.

Too long, broken or cracked, they cause our dogs difficulty in moving, sprains, injuries, sharp pain and possible infections.

Maintaining your dog's claws regularly is an easy act of benevolence.

Here's why and how to take care of it.

Why cut your dog's claws?

When your dog moves, all of his support is based on his pads and claws. Of claws in poor condition hamper movement, balance and posture. They are sources of discomfort and severe pain when too long, they curl and penetrate your pet's skin. Their maintenance is essential to keep your companions in good health.

To note that the lugs inside the legs do not wear out because they are not in contact with the ground.

Your dog's claws or nails should be checked every two months for a possible cut.

What to cut them with?

Getting the right equipment is essential for everyone's safety.

  • For small and medium sized dogs scissors or nail clippers with a security.
  • For large dogs, scissors with guillotine pliers.
  • As a replacement or for finishes, an electric file.

All of these items are available for sale or to order in the right pet stores.

How to cut them?

A few precautions should be taken before adopting this routine of care with your doggie.

Conditioning your dog

  • A few days before, press on the widest part of the pad. This allows the claws to stick out to gauge the length to cut and to accustom your dog to the handling.
  • Be reassuring.
  • Reward him if he behaves well. He must associate your actions with a pleasant moment.

The practice

  • Pick a day when you are relaxed.
  • Have your dog sit next to you.
  • Take a paw and cut the hairs between the pads if they are too thick.
  • The claw is made up of a part of living tissue, you must locate it so as not to injure your dog. It is a pink line that ends in a point.
  • Cut the claw just before this line quickly and confidently.
  • If your dog's claws are black, stand him upright and cut the claw low to the ground. This avoids cutting too short.
  • Repeat for all legs. Don't forget the ergot.

In case of injury

If you cut a little too short and there is bleeding, apply silver nitrate with a compress reassuring your dog. Protect his paw for a few hours with a sock held in place by an elastic band.

Silver nitrate is available from pharmacies.

In which case should you consult the veterinarian?

If your dog breaks a claw, see your vet, because there is a risk of infection especially if part of the claw is still in your dog's paw.

He will prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs and antibiotics.

Your dog will need to stay at rest and wear paw protection.
