Lemon verbena: Aloysia citodora
Also known as Aloysia triphylla and Lippia citriodora, lemon verbena is a small shrub reaching up to 1m tall. It is distinguished by branching stems and lanceolate light green leaves. Ending in a point, the foliage is very aromatic and accompanies white to pale purple flowers in spikes.
Therapeutic benefits of lemon verbena
- Facilitates digestion: Soothing, this plant stimulates digestion, eliminates gas and relieves nausea.
- Slightly sedative: thanks to terpenes which have a calming effect on the nervous system. Lemon verbena acts as a relaxant.
- Stimulating: this plant helps to fight against stress, in particular by treating gastric disorders.
How to use Aloysia citrodora?
You just need to harvest the leaves as and when needed. Infuse about 20 in a liter of water. You can pick more and dry them in the sun or in a low oven. All you have to do is infuse them like any herbal tea.
In essential oil
The essential oil is consumed by inhalation or by massage mixed with vegetable oil. In all cases, it helps to fight against a little temporary depression. For the massage, respect a ratio of 15% essential oil to 85% vegetable oil. Pregnant women should avoid using it and it can be allergenic when applied to the skin for sensitive people.
Cultivation of lemon verbena
Planting lemon verbena:
Lemon verbena appreciates a light soil rich in humus. If she likes the sun, she prefers the substrate to be cool. Not very rustic, it is better to install it in a pot.
- Choose a pot of at least 30cm in diameter
- Soak the root ball in a basin of water, while you prepare the pot
- Place a layer of clay balls or gravel at the bottom
- Mix potting soil and sand to create a light substrate
- Add a little compost to enrich it
- Put some of this mixture on top of the drainage layer
- Place the root ball in the pot, so that the collar reaches almost at the top of the pot
- Fill in the voids with the soil mixture
- Tamp and water, without letting the water stagnate in the saucer
Water the lemongrass regularly because the soil dries quickly in pots. At the beginning of summer, you can add compost to enrich the soil. As soon as the risk of frost is present, bring in your lemongrass. It will be enjoyed in a bright room, but still cool. Warmer areas can afford to leave it outside, making sure to cover it with a winter cover if the temperatures drop.
Lemongrass requires a rejuvenating pruning in April, before releasing it. At this point, shorten it to 20cm. Remember to remove dead branches that weaken the plant. You can regularly cut off the tips of protruding stems to guide the growth into a compact bush.
How to multiply lemongrass?
To multiply lemongrass, one proceeds by cuttings.
- Cut stems of ten centimeters
- Remove any flowers and remove all the leaves from the lower half
- Put a layer of drainage at the bottom of your container
- Add a mixture of sand and potting soil
- Plant your cuttings every 3cm
- Tamp, water
- Place them away from the wind and bring them in before the first frosts
You can plant them in the ground next spring.
