If you’re a digital equity practitioner, don’t miss CTN’s monthly Lunch & Learns, which we launched in January! Our first session, “How to Support Your Digital Navigator,” was a great success. Missed it? Don’t worry! You can still watch the recording and share it with your colleagues.
Registration is open for our February webinar, “Culturally Inclusive Digital Equity Curriculum,” which will be held on February 29 at 11 a.m. PT. Mark your calendars and sign up today!
Learner Spotlight: Thien Pham
In San Rafael, Marin County, California, Thien Pham, a vibrant 74-year-old Vietnamese-speaking immigrant, attends weekly remote technology classes with CTN’s Giang (Jen) Trang.
When asked if learning digital skills has empowered him to become more self-reliant, Thien says: “Oh yes, of course! I can do shopping myself and look up information without having to ask my kids…I can use Facebook to connect with my family and friends who live very far away from me. I don’t feel so left behind anymore,” he said.
By leveraging the internet, Thien bridges the geographical gap with family and friends, creating a sense of connectedness that transcends physical distance. Read Thien’s story.
Partner Spotlight: City of Oakland
With funding from the California Public Utilities Commision, CTN and the City of Oakland set out to teach basic computer skills to 100 older adults in both English and Cantonese. The classes were extremely popular!
Jessi Cutter, the Director of Downtown Oakland Senior Center says: “I’ve received numerous compliments on the CTN workshops led by Sabrina and Damin. Many participants have shared that they use the skills learned in the workshop. Everyone is requesting more classes!” Learn more about CTN’s partnership with the City of Oakland.
Upcoming Conferences

One of the nation’s biggest digital-equity-focused conferences, Net Inclusion, will be held in Philadelphia from February 13 to 15. If you plan to attend, don’t miss CTN’s lightning-round presentation, “Engaging Learners Through a Culturally Inclusive Approach.”
A culturally inclusive approach to digital inclusion education is not a nice to have; it is a must-have. CTN instructors Sabrina Tam and Bekah Wright will present strategies for curriculum design, teaching, and outreach/program enrollment. In order to ensure that learning encounters are relevant and effective for ethnically diverse students, it is crucial to acknowledge cultural experiences, frames of reference, and values.
