Today the United States may undergo a major change in Internet regulation that could greatly affect the country — the end of net neutrality.
For those unaware of what net neutrality is, it is the set of rules that were put in place under the Obama administration saying that Internet service providers (ISP) must treat all content equally without giving preference to certain providers. FCC Chairman Ajit Pai has proposed the removal of ISPs as a public utility. This means that ISPs could potentially charge more for access to different websites.
Those in favor of net neutrality have expressed concerns about an increase in censorship and the cost of Internet connectivity. They also fear what this potential censorship will mean in regards to their First Amendment right to free speech.
