In the heart of San Rafael, Marin County, California, a vibrant 74-year-old learner named Thien has embarked on a transformative journey into the digital world with the guidance of Community Tech Network. Originally from Vietnam, Thien left his homeland long ago, and it was his eagerness to learn that initially brought him to CTN’s doorstep.
Unveiling Hidden Struggles
During the intake process, Thien exuded confidence in his ability to use a smart device. Yet, as the sessions unfolded, it became apparent to CTN Trainer Giang (Jen) Tran that he faced challenges in understanding various icons and recalling basic button functions. Despite these hurdles, Thien’s determination shone through, turning each session into a step towards greater independence.
By the end of the training, Thien had achieved remarkable progress. He could interact with his tablet independently, utilize a Vietnamese keyboard (a skill previously unknown to him), engage with voice typing and voice search functions, capture moments with the camera, send emails, and even join a Zoom meeting.
Joy Found in Learning
When asked about how learning digital skills brought joy to his life, Thien’s eyes lit up. “Yes, because I get to learn new things, and I can catch up with what’s going on in the world right now,” he shared with a smile. The newfound ability to explore the vast online landscape allows Thien to stay connected with current events, broadening his horizons and enriching his daily life.
Online Adventures
Thien’s online adventures include watching music videos and news on YouTube, connecting with friends and family through Zoom, and staying social on Facebook. Online shopping and managing medical appointments through apps has become second nature.
Empowerment and Self-Reliance
When asked if learning digital skills has empowered him to become more self-reliant, Thien says: “Oh yes, of course! I can watch anything I want online. I can also do shopping myself and look up information without having to ask my kids. I can call and talk to anyone I want too!” he exclaimed.
Strengthening Connections Across Miles
Being online has not only empowered Thien individually but has also strengthened his connections with loved ones. “Being online helped me a lot with keeping in touch with my family and friends. You know, kids nowadays do everything online, and I want to keep up with my children and grandchildren. I can use Facebook to connect with my family and friends who live very far away from me. I don’t feel so left behind anymore,” he said. By leveraging the internet, Thien bridges the geographical gap with family and friends, creating a sense of connectedness that transcends physical distance.
Encouragement, Patience, and Internet Safety
For those hesitant to venture online, Thien offers words of encouragement: “I will tell them to open their minds and that they can educate themselves by going online. There are many things they can learn on the internet, and the teachers at CTN can help them use the internet safely.” Thien attests to the knowledge and patience of CTN’s instructors.
Thien’s story is a testament to the transformative power of digital literacy, and he stands as an inspiration for those eager to embrace the world of technology, regardless of their starting point. As CTN continues to illuminate the path to digital empowerment, learners like Thien light the path forward, proving that it’s never too late to embark on a journey of discovery and connection in the digital age.
