On Monday, June 2, nine Google volunteers came to the Aquatic Park Senior Center computer lab to provide one-to-one tutoring to excited seniors who wanted to learn more about the fun features of their Gmail accounts. Though public transportation created challenges that day, it did not stop the 12 seniors who found their way to the computer lab to attend the event. A few Google volunteers stepped up to the plate to double up and help two seniors at one time since there were more seniors than we anticipated.
The computer lab was filled with chatter as the volunteers and seniors learned from one another. At the end of the event, a senior came up to me and expressed her gratitude because she was very happy we put on an event like this. She also shared that she observed everyone else there was happy and smiling as well. This senior’s observation was right on point because, from the surveys we collected, 100 percent of the seniors reported that the event was excellent and that they learned something new about technology. The volunteers reported that they had an excellent volunteer experience as well. One volunteer shared she learned that tech helps improve seniors’ lives. Another one stated he learned that seniors were interested in technology.
CTN is thankful to Aquatic Park Senior Center for graciously offering to host the event and to sf.citi for connecting us with Google. Also many thanks to the Google volunteers in helping CTN and the SF Connected Program contribute to enriching the lives of seniors with technology education.
