The fourth iteration of Ready, Set, Connect! has officially completed its first month! We currently have a wonderful, diverse cohort of 19 young people, ages 16 to 24, who speak a variety of languages from Spanish to Mam to Amharic and bring a melee of skill sets and perspectives to the team. Over the next seven months, this cohort will help to bridge the digital divide by training patrons at local Oakland Library branches and working closely with their assigned branches to make an impact in the local community.
Between October 17 and October 31, the fourth RSC cohort trained over 50 Oakland Library patrons in basic digital literacy skills. During this period of time, patrons needed the most training in emailing and online communication, basic Internet use, and basic computer skills.
So far, the availability of RSC digital literacy trainers at local library branches has made it possible for community members to
- Apply for work
- Develop a resume
- Search and apply for government assistance
- Learn social media basics for business
- Communicate with loved ones abroad
Over the next few months, members of the RSC cohort will learn to become better digital literacy trainers, hone their professional goals, and acquire new skills and experience that will help them realize their dreams while giving back to the community.
