Tina Soloa, a 70-year-old former nurse, has lived an incredibly interesting life, as she’s traveled the world and spent time in places like Japan and Germany.
However, five years ago, Tina returned to her birthplace, California, and decided she wanted to re-enter the workforce. There was just one problem: she wasn’t sure how to really use technology.
Workforce Readiness
According to Tina, she had “ignored and avoided learning how to use technology.” Eventually, however, she says that she realized, “I felt behind. I wanted to begin working part-time again, and using technology is a must.”
With the help of Community Tech Network (CTN) and her patient instructor, Phil Schutt, she began to close the digital gap.
Embracing Online Applications and Remote Work
With Phil’s guidance, Tina says, “I am now beginning to submit my applications online for the first time. I also occasionally do market research jobs for added income and I use my device for that as well.” Thus, Tina has been able to use the internet to support herself financially.
A Confident Learner
Tina’s confidence has soared thanks to the digital literacy classes. “I feel much more confident and safer now. [In particular,] learning about scams and how to avoid them was very important,” she says. (To learn more about protecting older adults from online scams, check out this blog.)
Tina’s new knowledge has not only helped her with job searches but also in everyday tasks. For example, she says that scheduling doctor’s appointments and staying organized have become much easier for her.
Staying Connected
Technology has also enhanced Tina’s ability to stay in touch with her family. “I send pictures and articles to my brother and sister all the time now,” she shared. This connectivity has enriched her relationships, making her feel more involved and connected despite physical distances.
The Value of Patience
When asked what was her favorite part of her technology classes, Tina eagerly replied, “I really liked walking away from class feeling more knowledgeable and safer. I learned something new in each lesson. The teachers are very patient and will spend time answering all your questions. I love these classes!”
A New Digital Chapter
Tina’s journey back to the workforce is a example of how digital literacy can empower individuals at any age. It highlights the critical role that technology plays in today’s job market and everyday life. Her experience with CTN has not only prepared her for part-time work but has also improved her overall quality of life.
