CTN Highlights Importance of Internet Access for All

  • May 7, 2018
  • General

Digital Inclusion Week 2018 is May 7 – 11 and Community Tech Network (CTN) is participating in this nationwide event both in the Bay Area and in Austin. DIW2018 is sponsored by the National Digital Inclusion Alliance (NDIA) which represents more than 300 affiliated organizations in 38 states that work toward digital equity.

In San Francisco, the public library is taking the lead in creating “Connect With Tech“. The public can attend a tech expo to learn about technology programs, training resources, new services, and the latest products.

Community Tech Network is one of the partners and will be involved in:

Offering a Digital Parents class on Wednesday, May 9, at Twitter’s NeighborNest. The class will be delivered in English from 10 a.m. to noon and in Spanish from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. It will show how technology is changing the way students learn and is reshaping the way parents and teachers interact. Participants will learn strategies to help their children with schoolwork and keep them safe online. They will also learn how to connect with teachers and see their child’s progress through the Unified School District portal. Free childcare will be provided by Twitter.

Organizing the Digital Leaders Awards the evening of May 9, recognizing the people who are doing amazing work to bridge the technology divide and raise levels of digital literacy within San Francisco’s underserved communities Tickets are still available.

Staffing a booth at the Tech Expo, happening on Thursday, May 10  from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Latino/Hispanic Room on the lower level of the Main Library, along with other nonprofit providers and tech organizations. All levels of technology users are welcome, including seniors and people with disabilities.

In Austin, we will be hosting a series of events called Tech Teach-Ins that match corporate volunteers with community members looking to improve their digital skills and take advantage of what their digital devices have to offer.  Non-profit partners include Austin Pathways/HACA, Family Eldercare and AGE of Central Texas. Corporate volunteers provided by AT&T and Google.

Special Tech Teach-In events include:

Wednesday, May 9, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will work with residents of Family Eldercare’s Lyons Gardens site. Senior, disabled residents will learn how to use the Ride Austin app on their mobile devices.

Thursday, May 10, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will work with residents from Austin Pathways/HACA’s Gaston Place site location.  Elder residents will learn to use transportation mobile apps on their mobile devices.

Friday, May 11, 12:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Volunteers will teach AGE of Central Texas learners to use G Drive, calendar and email.

CTN in Austin will continue to offer Tech Teach-In events on a monthly basis, highlighting one non-profit partner and one corporate partner.  Events will begin in June with Google Serve.
