Jose, age 70, is originally from Jalisco, Mexico, and currently lives in Santa Rosa, California. Learning digital skills with Community Tech Network has empowered him with a newfound sense of independence.
According to an interview with his bilingual (English/Spanish) digital literacy instructor, Yanely Gonzalez, Jose says, “I used to not know much about navigating the web, but after this program, I feel comfortable looking anything up and getting answers for myself.”
He continues explaining the self-reliance that technology has provided him by adding, “I am no longer in the dark. I am 70 years old, and I can now look up anything online that I need to know or that I want more information on.”
Now that Jose knows how to use the internet, he uses it for many daily activities. “I can look up church times, get more information about my insurance, and even read about the benefits of certain medicines and treatments.” Jose says he also loves reading about plants online and finding music and movies from his youth.
As someone who says he “likes to learn and take advantage of good opportunities,” Jose has a zest for learning and wants to continue his digital literacy journey. He says, “Now that I have mastered some skills, I want to learn more and practice sending emails and sharing photos for work.”
While Jose understands that others his age may be afraid of technology, he extends a message of reassurance: “The teachers are patient, and I would encourage someone to participate in this program. It’s important to learn, and it opens up a whole new world for you. I was able to leave the world of ignorance, and others can too.”
Jose’s experience stands as a testament to the transformative power of digital literacy. With CTN, individuals like Jose are not just learning skills; they are rediscovering joy, connection, and a sense of agency in the digital age. Jose hopes that other older adults open themselves up to the immense possibilities that await them online.
