Tutoring at Downtown Senior Center

  • September 23, 2013
  • Volunteer Spotlights

Downtown Senior Center has a large population of Russian-speaking seniors, and there is a big need for somebody who is able to teach them basic computer skills. Since Russian is my first language, I was placed there when I began tutoring for CTN. I was little bit nervous because I didn’t have experience in teaching seniors (except my grandmother).

I made an announcement about upcoming computer classes during the Victory Day concert at the center. Victory Day is one of the most celebrated holidays for Russian-speaking countries, which meant that there were a lot of people. The seniors seemed very excited to have a computer tutor. They barraged me with questions right after the announcement, which is why I expected lots of students in the computer lab. I was afraid two hours would not be enough time to give attention to everybody.

My first class was very busy, because all seniors had different needs. Some of them came with their own devices, some were without any knowledge in computers at all, and some wanted to chat more than learn computer skills. The computer lab at Downtown Senior Center has 10 BTOP computers that are always almost full, but I usually had only four to six seniors who needed help.

If you asked me what was the most difficult part of being a tutor, I would say that being able to help as many as six people in only two hours, when helping each person one on one. Usually I divided my time for 15 to 20 minutes for each senior to make it fair. The goal was to make them understand how to use a computer by themselves. I tried to explain the basics of how to use a computer and tried to answer their questions very clearly. I always made sure that they understood everything and checked to see if they could repeat all steps by themselves without my help. I also always wrote down topics that seniors would like to learn at the next session, which helped me to be prepared for each class.

I taught at Downtown Senior Center Computer Lab for almost three months, and after each shift I was very proud of each of my students. All of them did a really great job! I hope they will never give up learning computers by themselves!

I appreciate Community Technology Network for giving me this great opportunity to help promote digital literacy in San Francisco. I also would like to say a big “thank you” to Downtown Senior Center’s staff for helping me with outreach and for helping introduce me to the community of seniors there.
