Jonathan Chiu, a trilingual speaker (English, Mandarin, and Cantonese) originally from Hong Kong, has recently joined the CTN team as a volunteer computer tutor. Jonathan began volunteering at the Rosa Parks Senior Center on Monday March 4. In the past, he has participated in similar volunteer opportunities, working with seniors as well as tutoring in school through World Vision and the YWCA.
On his first day, he seemed calm and confident and adapted to the work environment very well. He faced a challenge common to many computer lab volunteers: the Wi-Fi was down. Instead he was sent to work on outreach. His first task was to translate the computer lab schedule from English to Chinese in order to promote the lab to the large Cantonese and Mandarin community.
Next, Jonathan went door to door of the Rosa Parks housing complex speaking with the seniors and letting them know when he would be available in the lab, what computer skills he could help with, and which languages he could tutor in. Jonathan will continue his outreach efforts until he has an active group of students to work with each Monday.
The addition of Jonathan and other service learning students to the Rosa Parks Senior Center has expanded CTN’s ability to provide computer tutoring to the diverse population of the Western Addition.
