Seventy-three-year-old Julieta L. was undergoing chemotherapy when she learned about the opportunity to receive digital skills training through Community Tech Network. The timing was perfect: although Julieta had used technology a bit in the past, her CTN instructor was able to teach her about accessibility features that she suddenly needed through our tech training programs.
“Julieta felt extremely grateful during our classes together, especially since she was undergoing chemotherapy and her hands were numb, making it difficult for her to press the iPad buttons or access certain features,” says Hira Ambreen, Julieta’s instructor. “I helped her set up the accessibility button and adjust the brightness of the display, which allowed her to navigate the iPad with ease, bringing her immense joy. These small gestures brought her genuine happiness and made our sessions even more meaningful.”
When asked about her motivations for diving into technology, Julieta’s answer was simple yet profound: staying connected. “Using technology allows me to stay connected with everyone in my family and ensures that I have access to up-to-date information and resources,” she shared.
Hira also taught Julieta how to take and enhance pictures with the iPad “enabling her to share them with friends and keep cherished family photos in her collection.”
Going forward, Julieta wholeheartedly recommends technology training to others. “This is a great program. I was lucky enough to know a little bit about technology [before I started], but right now it’s an essential need for everybody around the world to know about technology and learn how to access it.” she emphasized.
