Ming Ding Xu received an iPad and technology training from Community Tech Network after learning about us through Sourcewise, one of our partners. In a recent interview, she shared with us how learning digital skills has enriched her life.
“Learning iPad skills has brought me a lot of joy! It’s hard to put into words,” she reflects, her voice filled with a palpable sense of gratitude for the newfound opportunities technology has afforded her.
When asked about her online activities, Ming Ding Xu, who immigrated to the U.S. from China, paints a vivid picture of a life rich with digital engagement. “I usually continue learning online, take Zoom classes, self-study English, and use Google and Baidu (a Chinese search engine) to solve various life problems,” she says. “In the evenings, I watch the news and TV.”
But why the interest in learning technology? For Ming Ding Xu, the answer is both pragmatic and personal. “Learning how to use the iPad not only helps me solve many problems but also allows me to watch entertainment programs and stay in touch with family and friends,” she explains. “Compared to a desktop computer, it’s much more convenient to carry around!”
Reflecting on her favorite parts of the classes, Ming Ding Xu is effusive in her praise. “All the course arrangements are excellent, and I enjoy them!” she exclaims. “The content about using Safari, installing useful applications, and creating videos is particularly applicable.”
But perhaps most touching is how being online has helped Ming Ding Xu feel more connected and capable. “I can independently solve some difficulties online and maintain good communication with family and friends,” she says. “Through the internet, I can also partially manage medical issues related to family members’ health. For example, when they can’t go to the hospital, I take photos of their symptoms and forward them to the doctor.”
For those who may be hesitant to embrace technology, Ming Ding Xu offers reassurance. “In today’s technology-driven era, even seniors need to continue learning and improving themselves to keep up with societal changes,” she advises. “I had the privilege of meeting my instructor, Daphnie. Her explanations are detailed, organized, and she has incredible patience! She is warm, friendly, and never tires of answering all my questions.”
Ming Ding Xu’s journey is a testament to the profound impact of bridging the digital divide. Through organizations like Community Tech Network and dedicated instructors like Daphnie, individuals like Ming Ding Xu are not only gaining access to technology but also finding joy, connection, and empowerment in the digital world.
