Thirty-five-year-old Shameka heard about Community Tech Network through our partner, Compass Family Services, which supports homeless and at-risk families and helps them become economically self-sufficient.
While Shameka says she already felt “pretty knowledgeable” about technology, she decided to sign up for CTN’s program in order to take her skills to the next level. Doing so, she says, helped her in all aspects of her life: as a mom, and now, in her new career.
Shameka was interested in becoming a doula and lactation counselor, and she recently decided to take the leap and sign up for online certification programs. The weekly sessions were held over Zoom, and after learning how to use the platform with CTN, Shameka was confident. Completing the course has allowed Shameka to change the path of her career.
As a mom of three young children, Shameka says that what she learned with CTN will also help her parenting. “My favorite class was on cyber safety,” she says. “I learned how to track what my children do and monitor their screen time. I even told other parents about what I learned!”
She also taught her children some of her new knowledge. “They gave us a printout of keyboard functions, like how to do things with the CTRL button. It was just the bomb. You can hang it up and give it to your kids to learn.”
When asked if she would recommend CTN to others, Shameka says “most definitely.” She adds, “Our teacher, Audrey, was knowledgeable and down-to-earth. She made jokes and went at a good pace. She made it fun. The program was convenient, meeting for an hour once a week, and everything just flowed.”
Going forward, Shameka says she hopes to serve her community and build generational wealth for her and her children. She notes that technological skills are increasingly important in today’s society as we move toward a more digital world. Hopefully, what Shameka learned through CTN will help her continue to advance in both her personal and professional life.
