Idella Johnson is one of the six graduates for the month of February at Columbia Park Manor, a SAHA senior housing property in Pittsburg, California, where CTN provides digital literacy training. I am especially impressed with her eagerness to learn. She was always among the first one or two to arrive in class despite recovering from hip surgery. She scheduled her physical therapy sessions around the class dates and times to make sure she would not miss a minute of the class.
Idella came to class with some experience using technology but demonstrated high energy and enthusiasm relearning the basics and acquiring new skills. New skills included sharing photos she took on the tablet, learning where to find and how to install apps on her device, using Google voice search to look up useful information online, and gaining more confidence about avoiding scams and frauds on the Internet
Idella completed eight hours of training in three weeks and graduated happily last week, taking home a free tablet and a certificate of achievement. She plans to continue using the tablet at home to check emails, watch YouTube, and browse web pages.
CTN has trained 31 residents at Columbia Park Manor since August 2018, or 40 percent of all residents. Classes are taught in English, Spanish, Mandarin, and Cantonese. We aim to train another 30 or so residents to reach 75 percent by July 2019.
