Joyce Yeeping Jung Wong started taking computer classes at the Chinatown YWCA around five years ago. Before that, she would visit the South San Francisco Library. However, they had no instructors, let alone those that could speak her native Chinese. At 81 years old, she is learning the benefits of today’s technology.
Having found the YWCA Computer Center, Joyce travels over an hour to get there. She enjoys the availability of Community Tech Network volunteer instructors, who speak her language, while also visiting friends and family in the neighborhood. Joyce studied geology at a university in China, and she keeps up with the latest findings in her field through the internet. She communicates with friends, organizes monthly parties, and researches culinary and medical advice online.
When Joyce is stuck with a computer problem, she appreciates that CTN tutors are there to help her solve it and wishes there were more centers closer to her home that offer the same service to her community.
