Doris’s iPad Journey with CTN

  • May 23, 2024
  • General

Eighty-five-year-old Doris* recently completed digital skills training with Community Tech Network after learning about us from one of our partners, the Cupertino Senior Center. In this interview, with her instructor, Giang (Jen) Tran, Doris shares details from her experience about learning to use the iPad that CTN provided her.

Jen: What made you interested in learning to use technology?

Doris: Well, you see, everyone around me seemed to be so tech-savvy, especially with their iPads. I felt a bit out of the loop. But when the opportunity arose at the senior center, they made it clear that I could take it at my own pace, which was reassuring.

Jen: And how has learning digital skills brought joy to your life?

Doris: Oh, it’s been quite fulfilling, actually. Now that I can navigate an iPad like the rest of them, I feel more included in conversations about technology. It’s a small thing, but it means a lot to me.

Jen: What were your favorite parts of the class?

Doris: Oh, it’s you, Jen! I had a great time learning from you! Knowing that a young person like you can still have a lot of patience in guiding a senior like me was refreshing. You talked slowly and structured each lesson very well, which made it easy for me to follow and retain what I learned.

Jen: I’m glad to hear that. Has being online helped you feel more in touch with your loved ones?

Doris: Absolutely. Take my grandson, for example. He’s thrilled to see what I’ve learned with the iPad. It’s become a way for us to connect and bond, despite the generational gap. His only concern is that I’m still using a Samsung phone. He wants me to have an iPhone. Maybe Santa Claus will bring me one this year!

Jen: That’s lovely. What would you say to someone who’s nervous about starting a program like this?

Doris: I’d tell them not to worry. The program is designed to be beginner-friendly, and the support is there every step of the way. Starting something new can be daunting, but it’s worth it in the end.

Jen: So, Doris, what are some of the typical things you do online?

Doris: Well, I’m quite active now online for someone my age. I use email regularly, do my fair share of internet searches, and enjoy catching up on Netflix shows. Sometimes I’ll browse YouTube as well.

Jen: Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

Doris: Just a heartfelt thank-you to CTN for offering this program. Without it, I probably wouldn’t have taken the plunge into the world of iPads. It’s been a rewarding experience, and I’m grateful for the opportunity.
