On December 5, the Curry Senior Center held its official BTOP kickoff event, and it was a big success! The CTN team joined staff from Community Living Campaign, Self-Help for the Elderly, and the Department of Aging and Adult Services to celebrate the opening of this new computer center in the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco. The goal of the event was to promote the access to technology, including tutoring and classes in English and Chinese.
A brief presentation was given about the computers and training opportunities, which was followed by a Computer Café program. The Computer Café is a fun way to offer individual computer tutoring. Staff and volunteers from CTN and CLC donned aprons to “serve up” technology training, which participants could order from a menu of suggested topics. Eight seniors attended the event and were eager to learn new computer skills.
One woman needed help with her email account. She only used the account to give an email address to websites like YouTube in order to register for an account. Her email was full of advertisements and junk mail. She received some helpful tips to clean out her inbox and also learned how to send an email. Now she is going to find some friends who also have email so they can practice sending messages to each other.
