Last week I delivered a donated laptop to an older adult in San Francisco to better help him along in his search for gainful employment. Over the years we have collected computers, tablets, phones and even digital cameras, that we are now in the process of donating to older adults in need. Our colleagues at Community Living Campaign let me know that their client, Rich, needed a computer to apply for work and pursue online education. I was excited to learn that this donation would be his first personal laptop.
After speaking with Rich it was clear that he has a desire to learn and would be a great addition to our Home Connect program. With many public transit systems still shut down, I was able to make the short bike ride to make the delivery. Now connected, Rich has access to endless internet resources, ongoing digital training support from experienced digital volunteer instructors, and a team rooting for his success!
The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted the livelihoods of millions of people, and as an essential part of our workforce, we mustn’t forget the countless seniors who have been furloughed due to this tragic event. With libraries and community centers closed for the foreseeable future, those who do not have access to the internet at home or to a device are at a tremendous disadvantage in accessing essential services and applying for employment. Please consider making a donation to CTN to support our ongoing efforts to get seniors connected.
