Amplify Austin Day Is This Thursday!
Amplify Austin Day, our city’s annual day of giving, is coming up this Thursday, February 28, 2019. The 24-hour period provides an easy way for our entire community to give together while helping local nonprofits. Over the past six years, Amplify Austin has raised $45 million for hundreds of local organizations. This year, please consider supporting your favorite nonprofit that serves our community.
Community Tech Network has chosen to put a focus on parents in the Austin Independent School District. Some 51 percent of AISD parents are seriously economically disadvantaged. Among that group, several parents face more serious challenges when preparing their children for the next semester. Without stable internet access, it has become extremely difficult for economically disadvantaged parents to enroll their kids in school, apply for programs, and complete necessary paperwork. Fast, secure internet at home is a requirement to set children off on the right foot.
Many AISD students need the internet to complete their homework, and their parents must have access to online portals to check grades and messages from teachers. CTN and AISD have created a plan to pilot a program called The Digital Parents Program to connect parents and their children so that everyone can succeed in Austin public schools.
