Last year I shared that we would be working with SAHA Homes in the East Bay to deliver digital literacy training to their residents. That project is well underway, and we began offering basic computer and internet training at all three locations in April. Through this program, each resident has an opportunity to receive a computer by testing out or by attending a four-part class. Pictured here are learners from Merritt Crossing in Oakland watching a video from Common Craft to help them understand new technology terms.
The funds for this project are coming through a special state grant program managed by the California Public Utilities Commission. This is a remarkable opportunity for affordable housing developers to get the funds they need to build out broadband infrastructure and offer digital literacy training to their residents.
Applications are due every quarter, and the next deadline is July 1. Find out more information about this grant program here.
