Last fall we made the exciting announcement that we would be partnering with Comcast to share information about their pilot program Internet Essentials for Seniors. Internet Essentials brings low-cost Internet and digital literacy training to older adults throughout San Francisco. The program is off to a great start, and since the program officially rolled out in November, over 500 seniors have been connected.
Together with partners Self-Help for the Elderly and Community Living Campaign, we organized a special holiday celebration to help seniors sign up for the service. It was an amazing day, with a group of children lion dancing and Supervisor Jane Kim and Assembly Member David Chiu in attendance. Over 130 seniors attended, and 70 were able to get connected.
A few weeks ago, Community Technology Network organized a special event at Rosa Parks Senior Center to help older adults living in the Western Addition learn about the program and get signed up. We’re happy to report that through our efforts that day, an additional 14 people were signed up, and 3 seniors won laptops in a raffle! Pictured here is Kintak Kwong who is now learning how to use the computer with the help of our Cantonese-speaking trainer Adam Lui. Center Director Dornesha Landers said that it was “an opportunity of a lifetime.”
We are very fortunate to be partnering with Comcast and to be a training provider for the SF Connected program. Do you know a low-income senior who lives in San Francisco? Please share with them information about Internet Essentials. If you have questions and want to learn more, please email kami@ctnbayarea.org or call 415-683-0120.
