M.F. Wong migrated to the United States from Hong Kong over 20 years ago. She is now 73 years old.
The digital skills that she learned through Community Tech Network bring convenience to her daily living. For example, she used to walk to CVS Pharmacy to refill her medication, but now she is able to do it online. Additionally, Wong now reads the Chinese newspapers online instead of walking seven blocks to the supermarket or newsstands to buy physical newspapers.
Meanwhile, using FaceTime and sending emails to friends and family have helped Wong become more closely connected to loved ones, especially those that are overseas.
Wong’s health has been impacted as well, as she is now able to make doctor’s appointments online and attend them via Zoom meetings.
In addition, Wong learns new cooking techniques from YouTube and enjoys using the app “Mahjong,” which keeps her intellectually active. She also loves using “Siri” on her iPad. It is very helpful for searching for things online and saves her time by not manually having to look for information like she would do before.
Overall, Wong says that being online has helped her become more self-reliant as she is able to do more things without depending on others.
To someone who is nervous about getting online, Wong says: “The CTN instructors are patient. You don’t need to worry about not being able to make it. You can even enroll in the Q&A sessions for any further questions you may have.”
Wong is interested in learning tech as she feels that society is changing and technology is part of our lives. She says that she will be left behind if she does not keep up. She adds that the fact that CTN gave her a free iPad with instructors teaching both in-person and online is “such a great gift that she is grateful for.”
